Green Fuels Research Optimises Lab Operations with Ducted Fume Cupboard.
The Client
Green Fuels Research [GFR], based at the Gloucestershire Science & Technology Park in Berkeley, is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation. Their work encompasses sustainable aviation and marine fuels, advanced agronomy, agricultural waste processing, and renewable catalysis. Through cutting-edge research and practical applications, GFR is advancing the global shift towards cleaner, more sustainable energy.
The Challenge
As GFR’s research and development efforts continued to grow, their lab facilities faced mounting pressure. The existing setup, particularly the limited number of fume cupboards, struggled to meet escalating demands for solvent extraction, biofuel experimentation, and other complex tasks. Ensuring the safety of personnel and maintaining efficient workflows became increasingly challenging with the existing configuration.
For further safety it was decided in conjunction with Firetrace™ to install all fume cupboards with a fire protection system.
Four of the cupboards required a DDA compliant height adjustable stand. With the idea of providing the very best at the forefront of our minds, Safelab developed a motorised stand with an automatic safety stop feature.
The Solution
To address these evolving requirements, Safelab Systems partnered with Monmouth Scientific to deliver a dual fume cupboard setup tailored to GFR’s needs. The centrepiece of this solution was the Airone XP 1500 Ducted Fume Cupboard—a robust, high-performance unit designed to tackle challenging processes involving higher chemical emissions.
Key Features of the Airone XP 1500 Ducted Fume Cupboard
- Safe Solvent Handling: The ducted design effectively contains and expels harmful vapours, making it ideal for solvent extraction processes critical to GFR’s biofuel research.
- High Chemical Resistance: Engineered to withstand corrosive or hazardous materials, ensuring durability and longevity under intensive usage.
- Dependable Performance: Provides a stable and controlled environment for sensitive experiments, minimising the risk of contamination or exposure.
Supporting Equipment: Monmouth Scientific’s Circulaire® CT1100 Ductless (Recirculating) Fume Cupboard
Alongside the ducted system, Monmouth Scientific supplied a Circulaire® Fume Cupboard. By handling solvent-free tasks, this recirculating unit helps free up the ducted fume cupboard for more demanding solvent work.
The Result
- Enhanced Lab Efficiency
With a dedicated Safelab Systems ducted fume cupboard for high-risk solvent extractions, GFR’s staff can simultaneously tackle multiple stages of biofuel development. The recirculating unit handles non-solvent tasks, improving workflow and ensuring the right resources are always available for each experiment. - Elevated Safety and Flexibility
The Airone XP 1500 Ducted Fume Cupboard confines volatile or hazardous materials to a secure, well-ventilated area. This significantly reduces the chance of accidents, contamination, and downtime, allowing teams to conduct high-volume or complex experiments with confidence. - Optimised Workflow and Scalability
By dividing lab work between ducted and ductless fume cupboards, GFR can progress research projects more swiftly. The flexible design paves the way for future expansion as research demands evolve, ensuring the laboratory infrastructure continues to support GFR’s cutting-edge innovations.
The Feedback
“We are expanding our capabilities, and one key issue that became evident is the shortage of fume cupboards. We needed to increase our lab capability. The previous setup wasn’t enough to guarantee efficient operation, especially for solvent extraction activities.
The new recirculating fume cupboard enabled work on solventless samples, freeing up space in the ducted fume cupboards.
Monmouth Scientific and Safelab Systems provided an excellent service from day one through installation and maintenance. The extra fume cupboards help increase the volume and efficiency of our R&D work.”
